Colartz logoMy Compositions

For 50 years or so I have created (primarily) guitar music/compositions.

I like to keep evolving my pieces so I have a tendency to hold off recording them, even as roughs. However, had I not on occasion relented and recorded some of them as such (and in hindsight I am SO GLAD I did), then I know without a shadow of doubt that they would have ended being lost to me altogether. Being roughs, though, means that most of them will likely never see the light of day - but at least there a chance I could bring some of them back!

Compositions with videos. I made the videos so I could remember how I played the pieces!

Album cover for 'Jessica Joane Cole' This 3 track mini-album for classical guitar includes three pieces: "Jessica", "Joane" and "Cole". They are a tribute to my beloved mother, Jessica Joane Cole (RIP 2022). She heard them before she passed.

I started writing/composing the pieces in 2021 and completed them just before they were recorded in the summer of 2022 at the amazing Denmark Studios (biggup to Jeff Cooper for his patience and being an amazing recording engineer). I played them rather 'imperfectly' (i.e. I missed some notes etc.) but I am glad I at least managed to record them all the same.

"That's About It" (2020)

2m 15s

Steel Guitar

This piece has a jazzy feel but and some strong melodic phrasing. It's not perfect by any means, but I recorded it to get the gist of it (it was different every time) and to make sure I did not lose it. The initial version was used as a jingle by Lucy Cole in her "Earsight" Riverside radio show.

"On Second Thoughts" (2018)

3m 15s

Steel Guitar

This guitar piece starts with an easy to play melodic riff, which to me has the feel of open country and fresh starts. As it progresses it oscillates between this and a more reflective, nostalgic section - on every journey there are unexpected challenges that need to be overcome and some things may need to be left behind as a consequence of that.

2m 27s

Steel Guitar

This jazzy piece is played on steel acoustic guitar. It has a punchy chord riff and has quite a "happy" feel with some unknown time signature (I am tending these days to try to follow the muse and not fit everything into boxes). It complements a picture of the same name "Playing to the Gallery".

"Three Two One Awake" (2016)

2m 27s

Classical Guitar

This quirky piece (audio recording played on classical guitar) has a few interesting jazz chords and some nice melodies. I decided to let it be free flowing so I have no idea of time signature. It is meant to accompany a picture of the same name "Three Two One Awake".

"Not In My Name" (2016)

2m 36s

Steel Guitar

This piece is dedicated to my amazing son, Ben. It is very enjoyable to play and requires very specific hand and finger positioning for certain slides and to allow certain notes to ring on. I am hoping to re-record it one day.

"His Story All Over" (2006)

3m 32s

Steel Guitar/Synth

An old man in a hotel room. His last look back at his life, alone. It flashes by, again, and again. A series of memories in the blink of an eye. And it is gone. A story once told, and never to be told again.
