Sloppy copy

Posted by Tim Cole on 16th March 2008

I keep wanting to get around to trying a technique I call “sloppy copy”. This is basically having an audio track going in the background, and using an audio to MIDI plugin to then extract some MIDI information from it. I then want to feed that into noatikl to get it to compose around that data. At the back of my mind is that I want to try this with some of my guitar work. However, I think this could also be fun with other tracks, and it would be interesting to see what noatikl could come up with!

The interesting thing about this technique is that it is really nothing at all to do with copying (i.e. a one to one process). It is more a case of indirection, where the underlying element can be used to create a one to many relationship.

Anyhow, I am looking forward to trying it….

intermorphic progress

Posted by Tim Cole on 16th March 2008

Ever since intermorphic.com launched noatikl and liptikl in early December and got its store online Xmas eve, it has been busy moving things forward. There is always too much for it to do, and what Pete has been able to do with the software is simply incredible. Fingers crossed that some of the stuff being worked on now gets out of the labs sooner rather than later…. :)

intermorphic noatikl V1.5

Posted by Tim Cole on 16th February 2008

This new release is a big move on from V1 - because of the scripting capability and allowing MIDI input to control it.

The product now includes a “trans-generative music engine”, which simply means that the addition of scripting and MIDI input to the generative engine has given it a whole new depth. Allowing internal or external direction for a generative music engne means the output can have a much greater sense of structure imposed, and this is helpful to give the music more topology….

I am looking forward to using noatikl to generate alternative harmonisation for some of my guitar pieces. When doing a song, I always try to record my guitar to MIDI. That way, I can have a record of the notes I played, useful if I ever want to try to orchestrate it. Anyhow, I want to take one of these MIDI files and then see what noatikl can compose around it… It is just a case of me getting time to do it.

blog and spam

Posted by Tim Cole on 13th July 2007

I am sorry to say I have now dissallowed commenting on my blogs. This is until how I can figure out how better to reduce the fast growing burden of removing registering spammers (WordPress has been GREAT at filtering out spam comments, but it seems it is not so good at filtering out how to prevent spammers registering). If anyhow has any good ideas, please let us know (see my colartz.com contact page).

The sad thing about it was that the spammers were real people, as they were registering manually. They had particular fascination with pharmaceutical drugs and various means of pro-creation, but I have no idea they felt it necessary to waste their time with my blog, and the time of its readers.

As a result if this (and because we have now closed the intermorphic forums for a similar reason), I have temporarily moved back my MicroBR review details to this blog (see here).

Thanks for your patience…

Boss Micro BR review moved to intermorphic forum

Posted by Tim Cole on 23rd June 2007

IMPORTANT NOTE: I have transferred the detailed notes in this blog to the intermorphic “BOSS Micro BR” forum which I have set up. It should be easier for people to track comments and find answers, as the forum can be searched. I would be very happy if people on this blog wanted to join the forum and post there.

Intermorphic - at last

Posted by Tim Cole on 22nd June 2007

No need to say to much here, simply see the intermorphic site - www.intermorphic.com.

intermorphic

Intermorphic is the new company from me and Pete, and we are building some fun and useful new tools, tools for generating ideas. We are drawing on the experience and knowledge we have built up from developing Koan and miniMIXA. When the products are released, we will be actively seeking feedback on how we can improve them and to make sure they are focusing on doing the main things people want to do with them (and getting that right is always hard!).

liptikl

The first product we release will be liptikl, a lyric generater for songwriters and poets. As some readers of this blog may know, I am a guitarist and have been writing songs for years. However, the hardest part of all for me is coming up with good ideas for the lyrics - and that stops me finishing many tracks. I know I am not the only one, so I wanted us to look into this challenge and see if we could help people like me to get those lyrics sorted and songs done!

What we are building should help you break writers block, and come up with good and unusual word associations. I have already used the early versions to come up with some interesting ideas. Cannot say more now, you will just have to wait and see how it works when we release it!

noatikl

The other 2 products we have to do are noatikl, a replacement for the legendary Koan Generative Music System,

optikl

and optikl, and light synthesiser.
